7 Years in Night Vision: What Building This Business Has Taught Us
Seven years ago, Envy Night Vision didn't exist. There was no night vision rental company in the UK -- not because there wasn't demand, but because nobody had built one yet. We saw the gap, took the risk, and started with a handful of devices and a lot of confidence that businesses would see the value in what we were offering.
Seven years later, we're still the only dedicated night vision rental company in the country. Here's what that journey has taught us.
The Market Was There -- It Just Didn't Know It Yet
When we started, most of our early conversations involved explaining what night vision hire even was. Security firms owned their own kit or went without. Events companies hadn't considered it. Film productions used props. The idea of renting professional, military-grade night vision equipment on flexible terms was genuinely new to most people we spoke to.
What we learned quickly is that once someone understands what Gen 3 night vision actually looks like in the field -- the clarity, the range, the operational advantage -- the conversation shifts from "why would we need this?" to "how soon can we get it?" Education became our most powerful sales tool.
Trust Is Everything in This Industry
We're handing over equipment worth thousands of pounds to clients who often haven't used night vision before. That requires trust in both directions. Our clients need to trust that the equipment works, that we'll deliver on time, and that we'll support them if something goes wrong. We need to trust that they'll handle the kit properly and return it in good condition.
Building that trust took time. It came from turning up when we said we would, answering the phone when clients had questions at 10pm, and being honest when a particular device wasn't the right fit for their job. Seven years in, our repeat business rate tells us we got that part right.
Every Client Teaches You Something
We've supplied night vision to security teams, film crews, airsoft venues, R&D companies, events organisers, and training providers. Every single sector uses the equipment differently, and every client has taught us something about how night vision fits into their world.
Security teams showed us the importance of helmet-mounted, hands-free setups. Film productions taught us about the logistics of managing expensive equipment on a busy set. Airsoft venues pushed us to think about bulk hire and rapid turnaround. Each of these lessons shaped how we operate today.
You Have to Keep Investing
Night vision technology doesn't stand still, and neither can we. Over seven years we've continually upgraded our inventory, made Gen 3 our exclusive standard -- because our clients deserve the best available technology -- added thermal imaging to our lineup, and invested in ancillaries like IR illuminators and helmet mount systems.
Our latest investment -- the Envy Defender, a purpose-built night vision response vehicle -- is the biggest R&D project we've taken on. It's a reflection of where this business is heading: not just equipment hire, but integrated night vision solutions.
Being the Only One Has Its Challenges
Being the UK's only night vision rental company sounds like a competitive advantage -- and it is. But it also means there's no blueprint to follow. Every process, every pricing model, every client onboarding workflow -- we built it from scratch. There's no competitor to benchmark against, no industry forum to compare notes in.
That forced us to be resourceful and to listen very carefully to our clients. They've effectively shaped our business model through their feedback and requirements. We wouldn't have it any other way.
What We'd Tell Ourselves on Day One
Start with fewer devices and better ones. Don't underestimate how much time you'll spend educating the market. Answer every enquiry like it's your most important one -- because early on, it is. And invest in relationships, not just equipment. The clients who trusted us in year one are still with us in year seven.
What's Next
Seven years is a milestone, not a finish line. We're expanding our thermal imaging range, deploying the Envy Defender later this year, and continuing to build partnerships with businesses across sectors that operate after dark. If the next seven years are anything like the first, we'll be learning something new every week.
Thanks to every client, partner, and supporter who's been part of this journey. We're just getting started.
